RPG Maker Save Editor FAQ
Scope, backups, file locations, and troubleshooting for RPG Maker MV and MZ saves.
Getting Started
What is SaveFileTool?
SaveFileTool is a free, browser-based RPG Maker save editor for compatible local save files.
Is this safe to use?
The main editor processes selected files in your browser. Always keep a backup before replacing a save file.
Do I need to create an account?
No. SaveFileTool requires no registration or login.
Is this really free?
Yes. The editor is free to use and currently ships without third-party advertising scripts.
Supported Files
What file formats are supported?
Separate public editors accept MZ .rmmzsave and MV .rpgsave files. MV gold editing was verified in an official MV 1.6.1 trial project, from 1234 to 98765 with successful game loading. Older RPG Maker formats remain outside public support.
Can I edit other game engines?
Not on this public build. If a format is not listed on the RPG Maker editor page, it is outside the current published support scope.
Can I edit console saves?
Console saves are usually encrypted or wrapped in platform containers and are not supported.
Finding Save Files
Where are RPG Maker MV and MZ saves located?
Desktop MZ games commonly use save/ inside the game folder. MV games commonly use www/save/ or save/. Browser-only games may keep saves in browser storage instead of a disk file.
How do I know which file to choose?
Choose the actual save slot file: file1.rpgsave for the MV editor or file1.rmmzsave for MZ. Do not select an executable, archive, or unrelated game asset.
Editing Saves
How do I edit gold or money?
Choose an MV .rpgsave or MZ .rmmzsave file in the matching editor, change the gold or money field, then download and load the edited file in game.
Can I edit items, variables, and switches?
These fields are candidate fields. They may appear in decoded data, but exact meaning is game-specific, so make small changes and verify in game.
Will editing break my save?
It can if you change the wrong value or use extreme numbers. Keep the original backup until the edited file is verified.
Troubleshooting
Why does the editor show 'Invalid file' or 'Parse error'?
Check that you selected .rpgsave on the MV page or .rmmzsave on MZ. Encrypted files and custom plugin structures may fail to parse.
My game won't load the edited save. What now?
Restore your backup, then try a smaller edit. Also check whether the game rewrote the save from cloud sync.
Can I undo edits?
Only if you kept the original backup. Save editing should always start by copying the original file.
