RPG Maker MV Save Editor

Choose a compatible .rpgsave file.

How to use the RPG Maker MV editor

  1. Save your game and copy the original file1.rpgsave before editing
  2. Find your desktop MV save in the game folder under www/save/ or save/; browser-only games may keep saves in browser storage instead
  3. Choose a .rpgsave file on this page. For .rmmzsave files, use the separate MZ editor
  4. Start with a small gold change. The verified workflow uses an official trial project; custom game plugins may use different save structures
  5. Download and extract the zip, place the edited save in its original save folder, then load it in your game. Keep the backup until the new value is confirmed

Published features

  • Gold editing verified in an official RPG Maker MV 1.6.1 trial project: 1234 to 98765, confirmed by loading the edited save in game
  • Process .rpgsave files locally in your browser without uploading save contents
  • Download the edited save and an unchanged original backup together in a zip
  • Review candidate actor, inventory, variable, and switch fields; verify changes in your own game

What is an .rpgsave editor?

An .rpgsave editor reads a RPG Maker MV save slot and lets you change compatible values before rebuilding the file. SaveFileTool runs this workflow in your browser. Choose your desktop save above, check the detected gold value, make a small change, and download a zip containing the edited save and an original backup. You do not need an account or an installer.

An MV save records more than money: it can contain party members, inventory, map position, switches, variables, and progress. Those values belong to the game's rules. A number that looks editable may control a quest or an event rather than a resource. Gold is the verified edit path here; other detected fields remain candidates until you check them in your game.

Where to find RPG Maker MV save files

For a downloaded Windows game, start in the folder containing its executable. Many packaged MV games put the project inside www/, with saves in www/save/. Others keep project files next to the executable and use save/ directly. An editor test project commonly uses the project's own save/ folder. Plugins and distribution choices can change these locations, so they are places to check, not a promise that every MV game uses the same directory.

Save once in the game before searching. Look for a slot such as file1.rpgsave and compare its modification time with your latest save. Files named global.rpgsave or config.rpgsave serve different purposes; choose the numbered slot for changing party gold. If several copies exist, make a fresh save and identify which directory changes. Copy that file somewhere separate before opening it in the editor.

A game marked “Play in browser” may store progress in browser storage instead of writing an .rpgsave file to disk. A desktop file picker cannot select that stored record directly. Use an export feature provided by the game if one exists, or consult its save instructions. Changing a downloaded web page's filename to .rpgsave does not create a save.

Change gold and load the edited save

  1. Record the starting value. Open the game's menu, note your gold, and save to a known slot. Close the game before replacing files so it cannot overwrite your changes.
  2. Make a separate backup. Copy the numbered .rpgsave file to another folder. Keep its original name so you can restore the right slot later.
  3. Choose the file above. Confirm that the editor identifies RPG Maker MV and displays the gold you recorded. If the values do not match, check the slot and directory before editing; you may have selected an older save.
  4. Edit one value. Enter a modest gold amount and leave other fields alone for the first attempt. Avoid extreme numbers or multiple changes that make a failure hard to diagnose.
  5. Download and extract the zip. The package contains the rebuilt slot, the original backup, and instructions. Put the edited numbered file in the game's save directory; do not place the zip itself there or replace it with the backup-prefixed file.
  6. Load the same slot. Reopen the game, choose Continue, and inspect the gold in its menu. Check your location and party as well. Keep the backup until the game loads correctly and normal play resumes.

What the MV gold verification covers

Our verification used the official RPG Maker MV 1.6.1 trial package's default project, running in its Windows game runtime. The game generated the original .rpgsave with 1234 gold. The local editor changed it to 98765, exported it, and the MV game loaded the edited file successfully. Its menu displayed the new amount. This checks the full save, edit, export, and game-load workflow.

Comparing the decoded files showed that only the party gold field changed. Control values remained intact: variable 1 was 42, switch 1 was true, and item 1 had a quantity of 3. The exported original backup also matched the input file byte for byte. These are preservation checks; they do not establish that editing those other fields is safe in every game.

This evidence comes from an official trial project, not a third-party commercial game. It supports the standard MV gold workflow. A game with custom save plugins, integrity checks, or a different data layout needs its own small edit and in-game loading check. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether to replace a valuable progress file.

MV .rpgsave and MZ .rmmzsave are different formats

RPG Maker MV and MZ use different save formats even when their games look similar. Standard MV 1.6.1 saves use LZString compression encoded as Base64. Standard MZ saves use a different compression workflow based on pako. Their filenames identify different engine formats: .rpgsave for MV and .rmmzsave for MZ. Changing the extension does not convert the stored data or the engine objects inside it.

This page accepts .rpgsave files only. If your actual slot ends in .rmmzsave, open the RPG Maker MZ save editor instead. Older extensions such as .rxdata, .rvdata, and .rvdata2 belong to other RPG Maker generations and are outside this page's published support. Choose the editor by the original file extension rather than the game's art style.

Why plugins and custom saves may not work

MV developers can install plugins that add fields, encrypt saves, change compression, or move data into another container. A file can still end in .rpgsave while differing from the default engine layout. Parsing a file successfully also does not prove that every displayed field has the meaning you expect, or that the game's own checks will accept an edited value.

If a save fails to parse, try a newly created slot from the same game and confirm that you selected the actual save rather than an archive or asset. If the rebuilt file fails to load, restore your backup and retry a smaller gold-only change. Persistent failure suggests that this game's structure needs further investigation; repeatedly renaming or recompressing the file is not a reliable fix.

Privacy, backups, and the 10 MB limit

Selecting a save here reads it locally in your browser. The editing workflow does not upload your save contents to a server. The download includes the original backup so you can reverse a failed change. Keep an additional copy outside the game directory as well, particularly if a launcher or cloud service synchronizes that folder.

Files larger than 10 MB are rejected. If you selected a whole project or zip archive, extract it and choose the numbered save itself. An unusually large .rpgsave may contain plugin data; do not delete parts of the file merely to fit the limit. Optional local history stores copies in browser storage on your device, and it is separate from your game directory.

RPG Maker MV save editing questions

Why does the game still show my old gold?

Check that you extracted the edited file, replaced the correct slot, and loaded that slot after restarting the game. Multiple installations can have separate save folders. Cloud synchronization or a still-running game may also restore an older copy; compare file modification times before trying another edit.

Can I open the .rpgsave file in a text editor instead?

A standard MV save contains compressed data, so its visible text is not ordinary editable JSON. Changing characters directly can damage the encoded content. Use a compatible editor to decode and rebuild it, and keep your original file for recovery.

Can this editor change quest switches or inventory safely?

Those fields are candidates. Their meaning and allowed values depend on the game and its plugins. Folder Mode can load names from the game's JSON data files to help identify IDs, but labels are not a compatibility guarantee. Test one small change in a disposable slot before editing progress you want to keep.

What should I do if the edited slot will not load?

Close the game and restore the original numbered file from your separate backup or the downloaded package. Check that the restored slot loads normally. Then, if you retry, change only gold and use a conservative value. Keep the failing edited copy separate from your working backup so you can compare the two.
